Adiamond is forever, they say. In order for it to sparkle all through, it needs a bit of TLC. Right from the time of its inception, your diamond has been on quite a fascinating journey before ending up in your jewellery collection. It is, therefore, important to honour it and handle it with finesse, so you can always bask in its warm glow.
We take you through some tips to help you store and take care of your diamond jewellery at home.
Clean
your diamonds regularly
Dirt
and grime tend to collect in your jewellery with daily use causing it to lose
its sparkle. You can keep your diamonds glittering by following a simple
cleaning schedule once a week. All you need is warm water with just a splash of
mild cleaning liquid. It is best to keep your jewellery away from chemical
abrasives and chlorine, as it can damage the metal. Let the piece of jewellery
soak for a few minutes. Use a soft clean brush to gently scrub the dirt
deposited in unreachable corners. Make sure the brush is reasonably new, clean
and is used exclusively for the purpose of cleaning jewellery. Rinse the
jewellery in water and wipe with a soft lint-free cloth.
Handle
your diamonds gently
Diamonds
may be among the hardest natural substances on earth but if not taken care of
properly, they lose their sheen even if you touch it frequently. Oil and dirt
from your fingertips can easily clog the metal in your jewellery and form a
film over the diamond, dulling its shine. So make sure you’re not fidgety!
Products like perfumes, creams, lotions, hairspray, etc can erode the metal
over time. So to be extra careful, it is advised that you remove your jewellery
if possible when you are showering or getting dressed up.
Store
your diamonds separately
Always
store your diamonds in an exclusive jewellery box, as keeping it along with
other jewellery can damage other metals or stones due to abrasive action. A
better idea is to cover your diamond jewellery in a soft cloth or pouch before
keeping it in the box. Make sure to store the box in a cool, dry and safe
place.
Leave it to the experts
While regular cleaning can be dealt with at home with a simple water-based solution and a brush, do not attempt extensive cleaning yourself. It’s best to get your diamonds professionally cleaned by the jeweller from where you purchased it, once a year or so, depending on its use and the extent of damage. Using steamers or ultrasonic cleaners, the jeweller will make your diamond look as good as new. You may also hand over your diamond jewellery to professionals if you need to get it polished or resized.
